Although she did not learn English until she was 17, George Starbuck, director of the Iowa Writers Workshop when she attended it in the late 1960s, commented that "she had not merely mastered the American language, but should play elaborate jokes on it." It was 36 years after 'Superstitions', before Wong May published another volume of poetry, although she had never stopped writing - and in 2022, she was awarded the Windham-Campbell Prize for her body of work.
