Among the topics covered are a visit with historian Hubert Bancroft, the California missions, life in a canyon outside Los Angeles, the port of San Pedro, the growing of raisins, rural Riverside, the schools in Los Angeles - and a chapter on women as cultivators of the soil, which comments on how women have become land owners, involved in real estate, and in such agricultural pursuits as managing a raisin vineyard. 288 pp.

Originally written in 1977, it was considered too controversial for most publishers, until Stonehill (which was known for both the quality of its books and for being cutting edge) picked it up two years later. A cult classic now, one online reviewer commented that he was "not sure if it is some kind of transgressive masterpiece or simply a twisted mess of epic proportions" (Adam Groves) while another noted that despite all the craziness and violence, it also contained "quasi-cinematic sequences that describe the often smogbound, but sometimes idyllic, landscape of the late 1970s Southern California, as if to say that for all its craziness, there is no better place to be on a clear and sunny spring morning." When this was later picked up by mainstream publishers, approximately 60 pp of the most violent sequences were cut from it and other minor revisions were made. 459 pp. ISBN: 0-883731002.
