Hardcover first edition - Set against the rise of fascism in 1930s Europe, Leavitt tells the story of a love affair between an upper-class young writer and an idealistic employee of the London Underground - a story based loosely on Stephen Spender's life, but more explicit about the homosexual love affair. When Spender threatend legal action, this controversial novel was withdrawn by the publisher, and later printings contain textual revisions as provided for in the out of court settlement.
