Throughout his life he was an advocate for evolution, science education, and human service, believing that science was the key to a future society. In his foreword to this book, he states that as he "is approaching the completion of the 'Unity of the Organism' that he needed the essays in print, partly as record and partly as super-record" of the development of his thoughts in this area.
