This tells of his childhood in Sandwich on Cape Cod, where after the death of his father when he was just a year old, he worked as a boy to help support his mother, selling milk and eggs, herding cows on Town Neck, picking cranberries, and roaming nearby woods and fields to find blueberries, blackberries, and mayflowers to sell. One of his employers, lived on Discovery Hill Road, a wildlife habitat of woodland and wetland, an area he loved to explore. This habitat became the setting of many stories in which Burgess refers to Smiling Pool and the Old Briar Patch. Despite the title this is not a typical autobiography but rather a reflection on many things - that "eyesight is mental after all" and the ability to really "see" does not depend on having vision; that he will always be in debt - not financially - but to those who have given him so much along his way, and more. Frontispiece portrait. 338 pp.
