At the first modern Olympics in 1896, he won (while on leave from Harvard, where he was an honor student) gold medals in both the long jump and the high jump - the only athlete ever to do so. This novel, set in a boys' school where the head is interested in athletics as well as scholarhip, expresses in fictional form many of his ideas about training (including not overdoing it), the importance of athletics and more.
