    Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, (1910.). Hardcover first edition - Uncommon young adult novel by this prolific author, lawyer and athlete. At the first modern Olympics in 1896, he won (while on leave from Harvard, where he was an honor student) gold medals in both the long jump and the high jump - the only athlete ever to do so. This novel, set in a boys' school where the head is interested in athletics as well as scholarhip, expresses in fictional form many of his ideas about training (including not overdoing it), the importance of athletics and more. Illustrated by Walter Biggs.

    Condition: Poor condition in dark green cloth with pasted on illustration on front cover (missing most of the spine cover, rear hinge cracked.)

Hardcover first edition - The first book in an eight book series, set at Yale University, and consisting of interrelated stories focusing on sports - especially baseball, but also track and field, and football, as well as an account of a most unusual regatta. Illustrated with a glossy frontispiece and 5 internal glossy plates by Worth Brehm, Tissue guard for frontispiece. The author was a noted journalist, who had attended Yale and who was on the football and rowing teams. 356 pp plus 4 pp publisher's ads for other stories of college life.

    Condition: Good overall in illustrated tan boards (some rubbing to the lettering on the spine and the illustration on the front cover, usual shelfwear to the ends of the spine and the corners, but a tight, sturdy and easily readable copy.
