Douglass, who recounted his story to his son, a professor involved in Reno's oral history program, began his career in Tonopah in the 1930's and eventually wound up as owner of the Cal-Neva, so his story spans the development from the simple slot machines (his primary business was the Nevada Novelty Company) to the growth of the large casinos.
