  • DECLINE AND FALL: An Illustrated Novelette. by Waugh, Evelyn.
    Waugh, Evelyn.
DECLINE AND FALL: An Illustrated Novelette.

    Edition: First US printing.

Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Doran & Co., Inc., 1929. Hardcover first edition - Waugh's first published novel, one which already reveals his understated black humor and which was described by Arnold Bennett (who makes a brief non-appearance in this book) as "an uncompromising and brilliantly malicious satire." However, it did not appear to be wildly sucessful in the US, since the unsold Doubleday copies were later reissued with a Farrar, Rinehart cancel title page. Includes a frontispiece and five other full-page drawings by Waugh. 293 pp

Condition: Good only in blue cloth with paper labels on the front cover and spine. Fraying to the head of the spine, sunning and darkening to the cloth and some fading to the boards overall, scattered foxing to the pages, offsetting on two pages from a leaf being pressed therein, etc.. Still, despite all the flaws, this is a reasonable copy - straight and tightly bound - of a very uncommon and important novel.
