Hardcover first edition - The sixth title in the Children of Other Lands series, each written by an author who had themselves lived as a child in that country. This story contrasts the cheerful and prosperous life in Belgium during his childhood with the coming of war when Germany, ignoring Belgium's neutrality attacked it during World War I, leading to both fierce resistance on the part of the Belgium people and to many refugees fleeing the war. Illustrated with black and white photographs. Publisher's Preface which notes "The graphic account he had given of Belgian refugees ßocking out of Antwerp led us to believe that he was one who could well and profitably tell our boys and girls how those of their own age live in a land that has become the center of so great interest." 153 pp plus 6 pp of publisher's ads.

Condition: Near fine in orange boards illustrated in red, blue and black (note on front endpaper presenting this "for perfect attendance" dated in 1915)
