In 1952, he was one of the first to contest an arrest for allegedly soliciting a police officer in a toilet in Westlake Park in Los Angeles (he was acquitted), a decision which brought a greater awareness of the Gay Rights Movement. This novel was based on his screen treatment which had been sold to Warner Brothers for a film featuring John Wayne (the cover photo on the dust jacket is from Warner Brothers), although the novel caused some controversy due to suggestions of homoeroticism. Set in 1877 in the Montana-Wyoming cattle country, this is the story of a cattleman who hires the only "men" left in town, after news of a gold strike hit - a group of untrained schoolboys.
