In addition to her poetry, she is known for her children's books and her books on education and care-giving; as well as a book about Kapoho, the hardscrabble town on the Big Island where she was born in 1937, and grew up in the amidst the anti-Japanese feeling during World War II, and which disappeared under lava after a volcanic eruption in 1960. Several of the poems in this book are related to wartime experiences. The title of this book refers to the spikes which bear Hawaii's orchids.
