SIGNED hardcover first edition - Hard to find third book of poetry by this respected Hawaiian born writer and educator, who in 2002 was recognized in "Living Legacy, Outstanding Women of the 20th Century in Hawaii". In addition to her poetry, she is known for her children's books and her books on education and care-giving; as well as a book about Kapoho, the hardscrabble town on the Big Island where she was born in 1937, and grew up in the amidst the anti-Japanese feeling during World War II, and which disappeared under lava after a volcanic eruption in 1960. Several of the poems in this book are related to wartime experiences. The title of this book refers to the spikes which bear Hawaii's orchids.
