Boston: Small, Maynard and Company, (1918). Hardcover first edition - A novel told in letters by this author who was - at the time this was published - compared favorably to Henry James, but who has since mostly been forgotten. Set against the backdrop of the first World War, this is the story of a lively young boy, whose life ends with a tragic accident in the English Channel. A NY Times reviewer in 1918 commented "Through the greater part of his first perusal the reader has the sensation of being lost in a maze, or endeavoring to fit together the jumbled parts of a picture puzzle. . But those who stuck with the novel, even giving it a second reading, would be rewarded with its 'fine literary quality' and 'piquant character drawing'." xii, 358 pp.
