    Boston: Crosby and Nichols, 1865. Hardcover - According to the preface, this is "a plain and faithful account of the cruises, rambles and adventures of the writer during 8 years of his early life "..1809 to 1817. Illustrated with steel engravings. 452 pp.

    Condition: Very worn condition - the corners and the lower edges of the boards have the cardboard exposed, the lettering on the spine is faded, and the cloth is beginning to tear, with some loss of cloth (about 1/2" at the bottom). The interior has both dampstaining and foxing. However, despite all its flaws, it has a lot of vintage appeal, and can still be read with care.

All pages are present - and this is uncommon in all early editions.

Ever since the first story - 'The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew' was published in Wide Awake Magazine in the 1880's, these stories have been read and loved by generations of children (Sidney married the publisher of that magazine - Daniel Lothrup - and together they purchased Nathaniel Hawthorne's home in Concord, Massachusetts - the Wayside.) Although both the title, and the author's preface refer to this as the last in the series, it was not, of course! Charmingly illustrated with numerous full-page & smaller en-texte drawings by Jessie McDermott. Frontispiece. 437 pp.

First edition - Athough "fireless cook stove" sounds like a contradiction in terms, this early precursor to the crockpots (except that it used retained heat from boiling water, etc, instead of electricity) was one of the few early 20th century innovations that actually enabled women to get out of the kitchen and still serve a hot meal later. This booklet includes a 4 pp of general instructions, some pictures of the roaster and 20 pp of recipes plus 3 blank pages for memorandum. Measures just 6 3/4 inches tall, 4 1/4 inches wide, unpaginated.

    Condition: Near fine in tan stapled wrappers, with black lettering and decoration on front cover (light crease to cover)
