New York: Friendship Press, 1940. Hardcover first edition - Although this book focuses on the experiences and Christian faith of several students at the Women's Christian College in Madras, India , the introduction comments that the demand for education has outstripped what the Christian Church can offer, and many schools are now available with no connection to any religion. McDougal was Principal of the school from its inception in 1915 to 1938, but her successor, Eleanor Rivett, felt that this book should be suppressed since its focus on the weaknesses of the Indian students could undo all the good that had been done up to that time and even endanger its future. While the defence was made that this was written for a British audience (and it was not, in fact, made available in India), the Indian staff were almost unanimous in disavowing the picture it presented and in feeling that their previous principal had betrayed confidential matters. Even the title "Lamps in the Wind" implies weakness. Frontispiece. 165 pp. plus 1 pp of publisher's ads.
