    Edition: An early edition.

    Boston: Oliver Ditson & Company, ca 1860. The work for which this German nobleman is best known; this opera was first preformed in Vienna in 1847. Although not as popular as it once was, it continues to be performed. This edition includes a synopsis of the story, the complete score and the words in three languages. Large soft-covered book, bound in a limp leatherette, 10 1/8 by 8 1/2 inches, 230 pages.

    Condition: Fair condition only - somewhat worn and very fragile condition. Title page detached but still present, binding loose, dampstaining to the lower corner and the margins of the covers and the first few and last couple of pages.

SIGNED hardcover first edition - The first SIGNED, limited edition of this play, issued a day after the trade edition - this is copy #52 of only 158 numbered copies signed by the author. (there was a later and much more common signed edition of 500 copies.) This play was the libretto for the first really successful opera by an American composer (Deems Taylor); the plot was based on a tenth-century Saxon story with similarities to Wagner's 'Tristan und Isolde'. A handsome production, printed on Tuscany handmade paper, and bound in cloth-backed decorated boards, Woodcut frontispiece and header. Extra spine label tipped to rear pastedown. 133 pp.

    Condition: Very near fine - a little chipping and rubbing to the spine label, but a replacement label is still tipped into the rear of the book. The very uncommon original slipcase is in poor condition - it is separated into two pieces and is missing the top and rear, but is rarely found at all.

The opera was performed 55 times by the children-prisoners of the Terezin concentration camp, where Krasa himself was also imprisoned, before they were deported to and killed in Auschwitz by the Nazis.
