Purportedly a translation into French of an Iroquois text written on birch bark by the Chief Chiokoyhikoy, this was in actuality an early example of progranda by the Continental Congress and the American revolutionaries - the key point of this 'prophecy' was that the American descendants of the English were less depraved than the English and it is with them that the future of the Indians lay. Although even the place of printing is a mystery (this book makes the argument that it was one of the earliest books published - although clandestinely - in Canada), this work was banned by the Inquisition as early as 1779. This book contains the original French text and the first published English translation. The preface by Denis Vaugeois and other material are in both French (en francais) and English, although the chapters on the literary and historical background are only in English. Illustrated with drawings by the Mohawk artist John Kahionhes Fadden, who also did the cover painting. 271 pp. ISBN: 2-7637-74490.
