INSCRIBED by the author on the first blank page 'For .... to whom Dan's quarry is a home front' and dated in the year of publication. Woodcut illustration. A very nicely produced book, printed in an edition of only '200 copies on a specially made rag-paper at the Walpole Printing Office, Mount Vernon, New York.' 75 pp.

    Condition: Near fine in pale olive green cloth with cream and rust paper labels (some chipping to label on spine.)

Hardcover first edition - A fresh and detailed assessment of Chaucer's "The Legend of Good Women" (probably begun in 1386, after he had finished 'Troilus and Criseyde' and before 'The Canterbury Tales'), a work almost unknown, usually ignored except for the prologue, and often dismissed as a 'fragmentary failure.' Yet according to Frank, this work, containing nine stories about such women of antiquity as Cleopatra, Dido, Thisbe, Ariadne.
