New York: Harper & Brothers, (1946.) dj. SIGNED hardcover first edition - Interesting and uncommon study of the early years of the most successful and enduring black labor unions. The discussion emphasizes the difficulties which had to be overcome - both because of opposition to labor organizing in general, and specifically to the racism which separated Negro laborers even from the rights being granted others. From the beginning, after Pullman started his sleeping car company in 1867, he used Negroes as porters: this had a double benefit - the cheerful and unobtrusive service they rendered passengers was what they remembered about travelling by sleeping car, and it was one of the few non-agricultural job opportunities open to African Americans. The Pullman Company eventually gained a virtual monopoly, but it remained strongly anti-union, and early attempts of the porters to organize had only limited success. The lasting achievements of the Brotherhood were due in large part to the efforts and talents of A. Philip Randolph, their general organizer, and later their president, and one of the most respected black men in the United States in the years preceding the Civil Rights movement. Foreword by Leo Wolman, frontispiece of Randolph, bibliography, index. 258 pp. Newspaper review laid in.
