New York: Lothrup, Lee & Shepherd, (1955) dj. Hardcover first edition - A scarce first edition of this classic children's science fiction novel which remains relevant today for its enduring themes of environmental stewardship, intercultural communication, and empathy. Named the best children's science fiction book of the year by Fantasy and Science Fiction Magazine when it was first published, it offers a simple and compelling narrative that can still engage young readers. It promotes a message of living in harmony with nature and alien lifeforms, a theme highly relevant in the modern era of climate change and conservation. The protagonist, Johnny Watson, the first boy born on Venus, works to protect the native 'jewel bears' (Marvas) from greedy human hunters, ultimately helping to establish a 'peaceable kingdom' where humans and animals can coexist. One of the central elements of the story is Johnny's unique ability to communicate with the Venusian animals, specifically his pet bear, Baba. Illustrated with drawings by Richard Floethe. Terran Press, which issued a revised 60th anniversary edition, described this "the greatest science fiction novel that most modern fans have never read. It was the only book Lee Sutton every wrote and it was a masterpiece." 182 pp.
