Set during the years of the Reign of Terror after the French revolution this follows the rise of Evarise Gamelin, an idealistic young Parisian painter who also serves on the Revolutionary Tribunal and descends into madness. In the original French (en francais). In 1921, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature and in 1922 all of his works were put on the (now abolished) Index Librorum Prohibitorum ("List of Prohibited Books") of the Catholic Church. 360 pp.
Condition: Very good+ in 3/4 burgundy leather over marbled boards, hubbed spine with gilt titles and decorations, red marbled endpapers, (bookplate on front pastedown)
