  • Grant, Robert (1852-1940)
    MRS. HAROLD STAGG.

Edition: First or early hardcover edition.

New York: George W. Dillingham, Publishers, nd (c 1891.). Hardcover - A gently satiric picture of high society during the gilded age - an era Edith Wharton depicted so well - by an author who was a friend of Wharton. Originally published as a serial in Robert Bonner's Sons, Publishers "New York Ledger" (a contemporary advertisement for the NY Ledger called it "Robert Grant's brilliant society novel") and in paperback by Bonner in 1891, this hardcover edition was probably issued around 1900 after the success of his novel "Unleavened Bread." Although almost unknown, this is, even to our modern tastes, a rather appealing and enjoyable novel. Extremely uncommon in any edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece and 5 inserted plates. 240 pp.

Condition: Very good- in red cloth with gilt lettering and decoration on the front cover (bookplate, bottom edge of front cover bumped, slight spine slant and a little fading to the spine - lettering is still legible.)
