The idea behind the symposium was to bring together scientists from Africa and other parts of the world to provide an update on the current status of the research into African Medicinal plants. As the introduction notes "Almost all traditional markets in Africa have sections where plants are sold for a variety of uses. A closer look at even modem shopping centers will reveal that there are thriving businesses of native plants. These uses include medicinal, culinary, fragrance, majico-medical, etc. In each region one finds indigenous plants that have emerged from the local culture and tradition as established items of commerce for that particular community. It is worth noting that many clients have established the utility and efficacy of these plants out of personal previous experiences and so simply proceed to buy them in very much the same way as one would buy common over-the-counter drugs and other personal hygiene aids. We have been studying plants that are sold in African markets. We have conducted surveys in such markets in several countries in Africa, especially in Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania (Abegaz and Demissew 1992) and Botswana. This report will deal with our recent findings in which we have identified novel anthraquinone and naphthalene glucosides from Rhammts prinoides (Rhamnaceae) and bianthraquinone pigments from Senna (Fabaceae) species." Compliments of the author (Kurt Hostettmen) card laid in. Illustrated with many drawings and tables, references at the end of each paper. Index. xvi, 336 pp. ISBN: 0-908307-59-4.

He pioneered the development of the Botanic Gardens at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology at Kumasi, Ghana. Along with his lifetime partner, Kali Sichen, Dr. Andoh developed a line of natural healing products, Harbinger Herbal Nutrients, and promotes a healing paradigm, the Mama Moringa Self Healing System. The herbal formulas are based on ancient and traditional remedies passed down in his family and used widely in Ghana and West Africa. (https://habeshainc.org/kweku-andoh/) Among the plants he was most associated with was Tabernanthe Iboga, cultivated for centuries by the people of Gabon for use in religious ceremonies as a psychotomimetic and as a medicine with analgesic effects. In the mid to late 90s, as Dr. Andoh began to talk more about Iboga plants ability to cure severe drug addictions like heroin, the plant's popularity began to take off. He was also instrumental in popularizing Moringa oleifera in the United States. The World Church Service was tasked with a humanitarian effort to increase the birth weight of babies born in Senegal, W. Africa. They called on Dr. Andoh to assist in finding a plant that could help nourish a constant stream of malnourished babies. His answer was Moringa oleifera, a plant with so many nutrients that it is like taking nature's multivitamin. The mission was a success and now 20 years laters, you can find Moringa oleifera in your grocers health food aisle. The North Scale Institute uses the plant Moringa oleifera, also known as Nebedaye, as a food and medicine to address the pandemic of diabetes, hypertension, HIV/AIDS and malnutrition throughout Africa and the African Diaspora.
