THE SICK MAN'S FRIEND, Being A Plain, Practical Medical Work; Designed for the Use of Families and Individuals on Vegetable, Or Botanical Principles. In Four Parts.

    Edition: First edition.

Taunton [Massachusetts]: Published by the Author, 1835. Hardcover first edition - "P.E. Sanborn was a practitioner of the botanical system of medicine in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Likely a member of the burgeoning "Eclectic" school of medico-botanics, Sanborn credits Wooster Beach as a major influence throughout the work. THE SICK MAN'S FRIEND... is divided into four parts, on "human structure," medical botany, "art of healing," and recipes. Of note is an admonition in the third part against tight lacing in women's fashion: "Multitudes of our women ruin themselves by this foolish practice...Desection [sic] has shown in many cases that the ribs had actually lapped over each other, and the internal organs were attached to the walls of the viscera" (p.234).

Condition: Original boards and endpapers still present, but binding has been rebacked with a new spine covering, original spine labeled retained. Foxing throughout - some penciled notations (arithmetic problems) on endpapers. In a custom made clamshell case.
