Although he was self-educated, Mason came to be considered as one of his era's greatest printers; among other achievements he developed the Imprint type, a congenial and readable face well suited for periodical printing and book composition. The author was a student of Mason in the years between the wars at what was then known as the L.C.C. Central School of Arts and Craft.
