Hardcover - Phelp's first book, originally published in 1868 and one of the most popular novels in the post-Civil War era (although the list of books opposite the title page indicates that this is the 76th thousand printing.) This is the story of a young New England woman who receives word, in the last days of the Civil War, that her brother has been killed - a small volume of 248 pages with a 42 page catalogue of 'Books of Religion at rear of book.
Condition: Good condition overall - 2 stamps for a public library and also a previous owner's name dated in 1887 - contents tight and clean, some rubbing and wear to the blue cloth covers with gilt lettering.
