SIGNED hardcover first edition - Andrew Mackerel has a simple problem - a very modern liberal pastor, more apt to quote Oscar Wilde than the Apostle Paul, he wants to take a second wife, while the town is still busy commemorating his recently departed first. De Vries, a longtime 'New Yorker' contributor, had a wonderful sense of humor that ranged from subtle to laugh out loud. Kingsley Amis called him "the funniest serious writer to be found on either side of the Atlantic." INSCRIBED on the front endpaper. 260 pp.

    Condition: Near fine in turquoise cloth (some toning to pages) in a a good only dust jacket with several small chips and edgewear. Original price of $3.75 still present.

    Boston: Little Brown, (1964) dj. SIGNED hardcover first edition - A novel in which no one knows how to love. Clifton Fadiman commented that "his wacky art reflects the fact that our conditiion is as preposterous as it is terrifying." Basis for the 1983 film starring Tom Conti, Kelly McGillis and Roberts Blossom. Although not widely read now, De Vries was one of the funniest American writers of the mid-20th century - sometimes laugh-aloud funny - although often with an underlying sadness or seriousness. SIGNED on the title page. 435 pp. Dust jacket by John Alcorn.
