Hardcover first edition - A reconstruction of the life of William Palmer (1824-1856): surgeon, racehorse owner.a confessed forger who got girls into trouble, doped horses, robbed a few people, but was he a poisoner? Palmer, also known as the Rugeley Poisoner or the Prince of Poisoners, was found guilty of murder in one of the most notorious cases of the 19th century. Charles Dickens called Palmer "the greatest villain that ever stood in the Old Bailey". He was convicted for the 1855 murder of his friend John Cook, and was executed in public by hanging the following year. It was claimed he had poisoned Cook with strychnine, and he was suspected of poisoning several other people including his brother and his mother-in-law, as well as four of his children who died of "convulsions" before their first birthdays. Palmer made large sums of money from the deaths of his wife and brother after collecting on life insurance, and by defrauding his wealthy mother out of thousands of pounds, all of which he lost through gambling on horses. The title with its reference to "saintly Billy" was a comment from his mother, who called William the best of her children and Palmer maintained his innocence to the end. Based on contempory records, trial transcripts, etc. Includes "twenty-three illustrations in the text", taken from 'The Times' Report of the Trial of Wm. Palmer, 1856.' 269 pp.

The first, the life of Delores Dye, a white housewife and grandmother. The second, a young black man with a gun in hand. Moments following their maybe not so chance encounter, Mrs. Dye lay dead on the sunbaked macadam, and the killer had made off with her purse, her groceries, and her car. Four days later, following a tip, authorities arrested a known drug dealer and father of five named Curtis Kyles. Kyles would then be tried for Mrs. Dye's murder an unprecedented five times, though he maintained his innocence throughout each trial. Convicted and sentenced to death in his second trial, he would spend fourteen years on death row. . . But the case slowly yielded a deeper drama: That police and prosecutors may have been complicit in the vengeance that framed Kyles cuts to the heart of a system of justice for Southern blacks in the era since lynch mobs were shamed into obsolescence." In reality, this figure of dread bore little resemblance to the scary sociopath of legend. In following Cunanan's 'trail of death,' Indiana presents a riveting, fully realized portrait of a very bright, even brilliant young man whom people liked. He had charisma, great looks, and money that he spent very freely on others. He was a sympathetic listener with a phenomenal memory for names, faces, and virtually anything he read or saw. But he didn't fit in anywhere, and he couldn't solve the problem of how to live. The two people he thought might love him for himself didn't, and he ended up killing them. . . in Miami he found himself trapped, the very places where he expected to 'blend in' were informed about who he was and what he looked like. It was isolation he could not deal with--and that led to his total disintegration and the death of Gianni Versace." Illustrated with photographs. ISBN: 0-060191457.
