Hardcover first edition - First publication in book form of the author's letters from a Mediterranean trip - a journey which took him to Madeira, Granada, Seville, Tunis, Carthage, Athens, Constantinople, Cairo, Thebes, Abydos, Luxor, Capri, and elsewhere. Full of interesting sidelights and comments - for example, Henry Timkin, the inventor of the revolutionary tapered roller bearings, and his wife were among the passengers and this leads to a digression on the need in California of faster transcontinental railroads; a brief comment "oil makes the world go round. Will oil be the cause of a future conflict?" Illustrated with 22 half-tone photographic plates by the author, with titled tissue guards. 117 pp. Map endpapers.

    Condition: Very good- in quarter green cloth over grey boards, decorated in gilt. Paper label on spine is no longer legible and the title was written in ink underneath it. Sunning to the spine and tidemark along outer edges of the boards.
