    Condition: Good overall in the original publishers dark brown half calf, marble boards, raised bands, gilt titling on the spine, marbled endpapers. Some rubbing to the covers, toning to the pages, and some minor foxing, discoloration to the edges of some pages. The binding is sturdy and the book is easily readable. Bookplate of Bullock and Crenshaw, Druggists, Philadelphia on front pastedown. The second book, Gray's Pharmaceutical Quiz Compend (to use the short title on the cover), is in very good in dark green cloth binding with gilt lettering on front cover Previous owner's name on front pastedown, some rubbing to the covers and toning to the pages, but overall tight and sturdy.

    Taunton [Massachusetts]: Published by the Author, 1835. Hardcover first edition - "P.E. Sanborn was a practitioner of the botanical system of medicine in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Likely a member of the burgeoning "Eclectic" school of medico-botanics, Sanborn credits Wooster Beach as a major influence throughout the work. THE SICK MAN'S FRIEND... is divided into four parts, on "human structure," medical botany, "art of healing," and recipes. Of note is an admonition in the third part against tight lacing in women's fashion: "Multitudes of our women ruin themselves by this foolish practice...Desection [sic] has shown in many cases that the ribs had actually lapped over each other, and the internal organs were attached to the walls of the viscera" (p.234).

    Condition: Original boards and endpapers still present, but binding has been rebacked with a new spine covering, original spine labeled retained. Foxing throughout - some penciled notations (arithmetic problems) on endpapers. In a custom made clamshell case.
