The basis of Housman's most sucessful play. A unique copy, SIGNED by Laurence Housman with the words "his signature" underneath (in Housman's hand) the words "Harry Essex, his book." Essex (1910-1997) was a writer, movie director and film producer. This copy is also SIGNED by Helen Hayes (1900-1993), whose starring role in this 1936 Broadway play was perhaps her greatest role ever. Hayes' signature is followed by the words, "his friend" with a line going up to Essex's name. 470 pp.

    Condition: Good only in a fair dust jacket. (stain to front cover of book, dust jacket is price-clipped, quite edgeworn, and has some loss in the middle of the spine.)

(there was a later and much more common signed edition of 500 copies.) This play was the libretto for the first really successful opera by an American composer (Deems Taylor); the plot was based on a tenth-century Saxon story with similarities to Wagner's 'Tristan und Isolde'. A handsome production, printed on Tuscany handmade paper, and bound in cloth-backed decorated boards, Woodcut frontispiece and header. Extra spine label tipped to rear pastedown. 133 pp.

    Condition: Very near fine - a little chipping and rubbing to the spine label, but a replacement label is still tipped into the rear of the book. The very uncommon original slipcase is in poor condition - it is separated into two pieces and is missing the top and rear, but is rarely found at all.
