    MOSES MAN OF THE MOUNTAIN.

    Edition: First printing.

Philadelphia: Lippincott, 1939. dj. Hardcover first edition - Hurston's novel of Moses from an African-American folklore point of view - as the great 'Voodoo Man' of the Bible. In the first issue binding, finely woven reddish-brown cloth stamped in orange on the front boards and spine.

Condition: Very good in a good only dust jacket (dampstaining to back cover of the dj, and affecting the rear board and spine of the book very slightly, chip missing at top of spine of dj, gift inscription dated in 1942. Despite these flaws, this is a straight and attractive copy of Hurston's rather hard to find last novel and the illustration on the front cover of the dj is striking. )

  • SERAPH ON THE SUWANEE. by Hurston, Zora Neale

    SERAPH ON THE SUWANEE.

Edition: First printing, with the Scribner seal and A on the copyright page.

New York: Scribner's, 1948. dj. Hardcover first edition - Hurston's fourth, and final, novel. This is the story of Arvey and Jim Meserve - Jim had gumption and wanted to get ahead, and so they moved from the Suwanee to the citrus belt in Florida, but the heart of the story is Arvey's long stumbling progress towards self-discovery and fulfillment. On the back cover of the dustjacket is a 2 column brief biography headed by 'Zora Neale Hurston writes about herself:' Original price of $3.00 still present. 311 pp.

Condition: Ex-library, but the only markings in the book are a pocket on the rear pastedown, mostly hidden by the dustjacket flap and a small light stamp on the title page. Overall, a tight copy is a somewhat edgeworn dustjacket, with rubbing and loss of color along the folds and sides of the spine, and a small white rectangle on the spine where a label was removed. Some offsetting to the endpapers. Despite the flaws, this is still a reasonably attractive copy of a book which is quite scarce in the dustjacket.
