Kovesi was born in Budapest, but fled to Austria at age 18, and emigrated with his parents to Australia in 1950. At Oxford University, he was influenced by lectures given by the philosopher of language, Professor J. L. Austin, and these later had an impact on this book, which starts by discussing the difference between evaluative terms like 'good' and descriptive terms like 'yellow'.
