Hardcover first edition - A long narrative poem which follows Kathrina through adversity - the wealth she was born to was lost, but she found shelter with an aunt - a poem which is a 'tribute of a love profound.' "Born in Western Massachusetts, Holland was 'the most successful man of letters in the United States' in the latter half of the nineteenth century and sold more books in his lifetime than Mark Twain did in his." (Wiki). His biography of Abraham Lincoln was a best seller and his book of essays titled Titcomb's Letters to Young People, Single and Married, published in 1858, had at least fifty editions. In addition to his writing, he was a respected editor, both of the Springfield Daily Republican in Massachusetts and later of Scribner's Monthly. Bound in dark green cloth with gilt letterina and decoration to the spine, gilt borders on the front and back covers, all edges gilt. 287 pp plus 4 pp titles available from Charles Scribner & Co's in the autumn of 1867. Surprisingly, the first title listed is a new book Kathrina by Timothy Titcomb, a pseudonym of Holland.
Condition: Very good overall, an attractive and straight, tight copy. Some foxing to the first few and end pages, first name of previous owner dated Dec 3, 1967, corners slightly bumped.
