Hardcover first edition - The first book by this African-American civil rights leader, politician, educator, and writer, an autobiography which tells of a lifetime of activism (not just in civil rights but also for women - as one of the co-founders of NOW - and in religion) through the 1963 March on Washington, where she was the only woman among the organizers - it was her public statement to Randolph and the others that it was incredible that no woman would appear among the speakers which led to the small victory of Daisy Bates being "asked to say a few words" - but as Hedgeman commented "we grinned some of us but we recognized anew that Negro women are second-class citizens in our culture." INSCRIBED on the half title page and dated in 1973. A hard-to-find book, and scarce with her signature. 202 pp.

Condition: Fine in blue cloth in a fair only dustjacket with a large chip at the top of the spine, some creasing to the upper edge of the front cover, and tape repair to the bottom edge of the back cover.
