A KINGDOM.
Edition: First US printing.
New York: Horizon Press. (1978) dj. Hardcover first edition - Considered one of Hanley's finest novel, this is the story of the complicated relationship between a blacksmith, who sold his business to buy a remote farm in the hill country of Wales - the 'kingdom' of the title - and his two daughters. Anthony Burgess wrote this about Hanley and his work: "The geniuses who are neglected are usually the geniuses who disturb, and we do not like to be disturbed. The Times obituary accurately referred to 'the integrity and disturbingly acute though gloomy vision of his best books' and prophesised that they 'will certainly be remembered in the chronicle of the century's literature'. Chronicled, then, though not read." 201 pp. ISBN: 0-818006277.
Condition: Very near fine in a very good dustjacket. (review tipped onto front endpaper, some creasing to the front cover of the dj)
