Cowles was born in the British colony of Natal in South Africa to American missionary parents, and became known for his research on desert ecology and reptile thermoregulation, as well as one of America's first ecologists and conservationists. Condition: Very near fine in terra cotta boards with black lettering, with only fragments of the dust jacket laid in (most of the front cover, both flaps)
