Set on a vast Arizona ranch in 1923, this is the gripping story of a lonesome yet resilient boy, known as 'Whichaway' for his habit of going in all directions, who is badly injured with both legs broken when a dust devil hits a windmill he is checking on He is stranded on a 4 ft square platform, struggling just to survive, left to die by rustlers, but still able to use his ingenuity and to find the courage to take the first steps to save himself. Illustrated with drawings by Richard M. Powers. Kirkus Reviews commented that "once they start this, they'll read it right through to the end without stopping or losing their place." 101 pp.
