Hardcover first edition - The third volume of his Vaiden trilogy (the second in this trilogy - 'The Store' - won the Pulitzer Prize) which follows three generations of the Vaiden family from the Civil War through the post-Reconstruction era in the late nineteenth century, and finally, to the 1920s. Set in Florence in the 1920s at a time of economic boom when the rising white middle class is beginning to challenge the long dominance of wealthy landowners and merchants - a period which also saw significant changes in the status of Southern women and blacks. The now elderly Milt Vaiden, a banker, prime mover in the great real estate book, and prominent member of his church, supports building a great new structure, a building in which he plans to be buried. 383 pp plus 2 pp synopsis of the trilogy.

Condition: Very good in black cloth with paper labels on spine and front cover (sunning to the spine and a bit of fading to front cover, but overall tight, sturdy and clean, no dust jacket.
