THE TREASURES OF MISSION SANTA INES: A History and Catalog of the Paintings, Sculpture, and Craft Works.
Edition: First printing.
Fresno, California: Academy of California Church History, 1956. dj. SIGNED hardcover first edition - A history of Mission Santa Ines, in the Santa Inez Valley in what is now the town of Solvang. It also describes early California mission life, and provides a brief history of events in Mexico and California that affected the missions. However, despite its claim to completeness, the Chumash revolt of 1824 is barely mentioned; in general this book praises the missions for their role in "civilizing" the Native Americans. The focus, however, is on the art which adorns the buildings with over 100 illustrations. INSCRIBED on the front endpaper and dated in 1957 by Father Irenaeus O'Sullivan, OFM, Cap., the superior of the Mission at the time this book was published, and the overseer of the restoration work. Frontispiece portrait of Francisco Garcia Diego, Notes, reading list, index. 323 pp
Condition: Fine in grey cloth binding with green stamped title to spine in a near fine dust jacket (price-clipped).
