The members of an exclusive London club endeavor to solve a baffling murder. On a foggy night in 1897, an American diplomat tells three other club members of a recent night when he was lost in the London fog and heard a distant scream. Following the sound, he entered a strange house, where he discovered a man lying dead on a princesss divan, a crime which baffled Scotland Yard. A title on the 'Queen's Quorum' list of the 125 most important detective novels from 1854 to 1967. Many full page illustrations by Frederic Dorr Steele and Thomas Mitchell Pierce. Bound together with the short story "The Death of Rodriguez," a story of the execution by firing squad of a young Cuban insurgent. Surprisingly uncommon early reprint, bound in decorative olive green boards, with Grosset and Dunlap noted at the base of the spine. 189 pp.
