Hardcover first edition - The author , who was born in Ghana in West Africa is a noted scholar and botantist who was director of the Smithsonian's Endangered Species Program at the time this was published. The book is dedicated to his mother, Grace Ayensu, an author and photographer, but also a woman "who first taught all her children the therapeutic valus of herbal medicine" and who worked to bridge the gap between traditional and modern medicine - as this book does also. In his foreword, Richard Evans Schultes, Director of the Botanical Museum at Harvard, notes that every species of plant is a different chemical factory and the folk knowledge of these plants - and the plants themselves are in danger of being lost. Illustrated with photographs and full page botanical drawings throughout. Includes 187 species, 127 illustrated. The first book in the series "Medicinal Plants of the World."
