THE CAMBRIDGE QUINTET: A Work of Scientific Speculation

Edition: First printing.

Reading, Massachusetts: Addison-Wesley, (1998) dj. SIGNED hardcover first edition - A book which creates an imaginary evening of intellectual inquiry. It is 1949 C.P. Snow (author, civil servant, and physicist) is hosting a dinner party in his rooms at Cambridge University to discuss the possibility that a machine could be made to think. The guests include philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, mathematician and computer codebreaker Alan Turing, physicist Erwin Schrdinger, and geneticist J.B.S. Haldane. While it does not come to any conclusions, this does provide a comprehensible and entertaining introduction to an important question, as well as to the ideas and personalities of some of the 20th century's most influential thinkers. INSCRIBED on the front endpaper to the noted collector, Larry Owens, and dated in the year of publication. Author's note, introduction to the guests with small photos of each one. xxiii, 181 pp. ISBN: 0-201328283.
