JOHN GOFFE'S MILL.

Edition: First printing.

New York: Norton, (1948) dj. SIGNED postcard, hardcover first edition - In the late 1930s an archaeologist at Harvard and his statistician wife left academia to make a life for themselves on the brookside New Hampshire property that had been in the professor's family for two centuries. All that remained at the time was a farmhouse badly in need of repairs and a fallen-down water-mill, originally built by his ancestor John Goffe in the 1700s. Shortly after they arrived the 1938 hurricane devastated their small wood lot. Nevertheless, with the help of local artisans, they learned first saw-milling, then grain-milling, lathe-turning and finally country furniture-making. A story of a way of life disappearing even back then, told with charm and humor. Illustrated with drawings by Arthur Conrad. Laid in is a typed SIGNED postcard from Woodbury showing the restored mill. 245 pp.

Condition: Good condition overall in a poor example of the scarce dustjacket. Some offsetting and foxing to the endpapers and edges of textblock, corners slightly . some spots to the covers. The dust jacket and the flaps are in separate pieces and missing the spine portion entirely. The postcard is in good condition.
