Based in large part on letters to and from Dickens, these bring out the darker side of Dickens's personality, although Nicoll is quoted in the prefatory note as saying "There must be reticences. It is not decent or right to tell in print all you know of a man - you may easily misrepresent him by doing so." Includes two essays on Dickens and Edgar Allen Poe.
