CLAUDINE AT SCHOOL.
Edition: First English language edition.
New York: Albert and Charles Boni, 1930. Hardcover first edition - Colette's first book originally published in France in 1900 with only her husband Willy's name on it as the author. The iconic opening line sets the mood for the story - " y name is Claudine, I live in Montigny; I was born there in 1884; I shall probably not die there." Translated from the French by Janet Flanner, although she is not credited (The "Encyclopedia of Literary Translation Into English" notes that "Flanner's translation is more competent and remains very readable despite its greater age."). Illustrated with drawings by H. Mirande. 297 pp.
Condition: Good overall in pale orange cloth with red lettering - some soiling to the covers, tanning to the spine, and a bit of fraying to the ends of the spine, no dust jacket - but still a tight and decent copy of a quite hard to find book.
