Boston: Ticknor and Company, 1887. Hardcover first edition - Novel by this author, editor of the Atlantic Monthly, biographer and friend of Mark Twain, and a supporter of the new realism. Interesting ownership markings - penciled in the gutter of the first page is the notation "bought May 10, 1948, Los Angeles 10c first edition. On the front pastedown is an oval stamp of "The Lobster Pot - C.H.E. Hardin, 155 Dwight Ave., Ocean Park, Cal." and also on the front pastedown is an address label for poet and author Laurence P. Spingarn. (1917-2001) 463 pp plus 24 pp publisher's ads.

Condition: Very good in the original terra cotta cloth, decorated in gilt and black on the spine and front cover (minor foxing to endpapers, some shelfwear to the bottom edges of the boards).
