In the winter of 1846 the Donner Party was stranded in the Sierras both because they had been delayed and by unseasonably early and heavy snows, and in order to survive some of the members resorted to cannibalism. Frontispiece portrait of the doll in Sutter's Fort Historical Museum. Illustrated with many black and white drawings by Elizabeth Sykes Michaels. Bibliography, map endpapers.
