THE HOUSE IN DORMER FOREST. by Webb, Mary [1881-1927].

THE HOUSE IN DORMER FOREST.

Edition: First US printing.

New York: George H. Doran, (1921.). Hardcover first edition - The author's third novel, central both in time and in theme to her work. Although this was set during the Edwardian era, the ideas it contains of social upheaval grew out of the Great War - World War I - and the effect that that war had on tradition. Although Webb won the Prix Femina for the best English novel for 'Precious Bane' her work was not well known during her life, and it was only the re-issue of her novels (after her early death in 1927 at the age of 46) with admiring introductions by such well-know figures as Stanley Baldwin, the British Prime Minister, that brought her work wider attention. As a result first editions of any of her novels are relatively uncommon, although her work is fairly widely available in various reprint editions.

Condition: Some wear to the edges of the boards and the ends of the spine, but overall very good in red cloth with black lettering and an illustration on the front cover (gift inscription and bookplate on front endpapers.) A nice tight copy, minimal toning to the pages.
